Two weeks ago, I received an email.
It was an invitation to participate at the 16th edition of the Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja.
For the first time in 16 years, the conveners deemed it necessary to have an Emerging Leaders’ Forum. They came to grips with the fact that true success is trans-generational.
I considered it a great privilege to be one of the 40 young Nigerians who were invited and sponsored to be a part of that epoch-making forum.
Initially, I wasn’t sure if my schedule would be able to accommodate it but after a few moments of deliberation, I concluded to make the necessary changes in my schedule so that I could make my contribution to the development of our Nation.
It turned out to be a fulfilling experience.
Right from the airport in Lagos, I sensed that it was going to be an exciting trip.
It was really exciting to see the likes of Fela Durotoye, Linus Okorie, Toyosi Akerele, Debola Williams and Gbenga Sesan again.
Besides, I was privileged to make new acquaintances with some really bright minds:Femi Omoluabi, a young brand strategist, Funmilade Adeyemi, a Harvard Graduate and excellent negotiator and Tunde Makinwa, an exceptional copywriter who works with DDB, one of the leading brand agencies in the world.
More importantly, we rubbed minds, exchanged ideas and made a statement that cannot be ignored.
I was particularly impressed by my big brother, Fela Durotoye’s striking and thought-provoking contibutions.
He started out by presenting a report put together by the British Council on Nigerian Youth.
Here are a few things that should get your attention:
- By 2030, Nigeria’s most important resources will be her YOUTHS not her OIL.
- If Nigeria pays attention to her youth, she could TRIPLE HER INCOME by 2030.
- If Nigeria provides an enabling environment for her youth, 300 million Nigerians will be lifted out of poverty by 2030.
- If Nigeria does not create an enabling environment for her youth, then she will have a DEMOGRAPHIC DISASTER.
The British Council report then enunciated nine areas Nigeria should concentrate on to create an enabling environment in order to maximize the potential of her burgeoning youth population.
1. Investment in People
4.Support Young Families
8.Create more opportunities for the young people
9.Create and Implement the right policies
After the report was presented, the main discussion commenced and that was a blast.
I’d give you more information about that.Just stay tuned.
