How To Change The World.

I seldom watch TV. I can hardly afford that luxury.

I spend most of my time in meetings, studying, crafting ideas, creating products, praying or on the internet.

However, once in a while, I stumble on a few television programs. I remember seeing several episodes of Steven Spielberg’s “The PINKY and THE BRAIN”.

If you ever watched the cartoon, the theme song should be playing in your head right now…

The Pinky and The Brain..The Pinky and The Brain…

One is a Genius…The other Insane…

Perhaps, the most memorable thing about that cartoon is that each episode ended with these lines…

Pinky: Hey Brain. What are we going to do tomorrow?

Brain: The same thing we do everyday- Try to take over the world.

I found that pretty amusing but also very instructive.

Taking over the whole world often proves elusive and everyone who has tried to take over the world at some point in history has failed miserably.

What is more practicable and what we need to strive towards is to take over our immediate environments…to transform them by taking responsibility for our immediate circles of influence.

I have always had the desire to see positive change. In my early teenage years, this desire intensified and I started reading scores of books, watching dozens of videos on personal development, corporate change, leadership, emotional healing and the likes. Much of this material raised several questions in my mind. One of the most prominent was “If I really want to change the world, if I really want to have a positive impact on my generation, how do I start ?”

This question lingered on in my mind for a while until I stumbled on the following words inscribed on the tombstone of one Anglican Bishop in Westminster Abbey…

“When I was young and free and my imagination had no limits, I dreamt of changing the world. As I grew older and wiser, I discovered the world would not change, so I shortened my insights somewhat and decided to change only my country. However, it too seemed immovable.

“As I grew into my twilight years, in one last desperate attempt, I settled for changing only my family, those closest to me, but alas they would have none of it.

“And now as I lie on my deathbed I suddenly realize if I had only changed myself first then by example I would have changed my family.

“From their inspiration and encouragement I would then have been able to better my country and who knows I may have even changed the world!”

Those words have changed my perception and my life. If this good Bishop wrote that on his deathbed, I do not have to do the same thing. I ought to learn from his experience.

One of the most frustrating things to do is trying to change those around you without first of all changing yourself. If you are going to change the world, you have to start with you.

Mighty flames are products of tiny sparks .The strongest chain consists of different links. Global advancement is a product of personal improvements.

Helen Keller said “I long to accomplish a great and noble task; but it is my chief duty and job to accomplish humble tasks as though they were great and noble. The world is moved along not by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of the tiny pushes of each honest worker”

Ask yourself “What can I do to make the world a better place?”

“What can I do to improve the prevailing conditions in my bedroom, house, home, workplace, school, team, city, nation and my generation?”

“What contribution can I make?”

“In what ways can I make a difference?”

We may not all have the opportunity to exert royal influence from Buckingham Palace or exercise political power from Capitol Hill. We will not all serve as the UN Secretary General or give out millions of dollars annually. We may not all be able to control the pressing issues of racial conflicts, terrorism, tribalism, inflation, rape, murder, population explosion and teenage pregnancy but there’s something each of us can do. We can affect the territories we control no matter how small or large.

If you make little changes in your life and I do the same in mine, sooner than we could possibly imagine, we will have global change. We can start a chain reaction and have a ripple effect. That is exactly what happens when you throw a pebble into a pool. Right from that point, it sends out waves in all directions for several meters till they reach the banks.

You can reach some places I may never reach and I will reach some places you may never have the opportunity of reaching, so we must make a positive difference everywhere we go and be sure our collective efforts will yield great results.

These changes will affect the thoughts you entertain, the words you speak, the dreams you dream, the goals you set, the visions you nurse, the purpose you pursue, the course you champion. They will affect the company you keep, the suggestions you proffer, the flames you fan, the principles you practice, the doctrine you teach, the philosophies you propagate. They will influence the insights you gain, the information you gather, the assets you acquire, the wealth you amass, the empires you build, the teams you lead, the organizations you head, the standards you set, the life you lead, the destiny you fulfill and ultimately, the legacy you leave.

The desire to leave the world better than I met it is one of my cardinal driving forces.

It’s one of the reasons I founded DREAM Academy.

  1. This is really an inspired piece. The words of Helen Keller are on point. Wish I could be at dream academy but my NYSC camp falls at that time *sad*

  2. That eulogy on the tombstone is deep!! Absolutely!! Small Drops and all that…Thanks for sharing and all the best with the seminar. Will pass on information.

  3. Good words you’ve written here Dami in understanding how we make a problem so big we let it overwhelm us, and consequently refuse to take action. It is the ultimate secret to problem solving. Break it down to smaller chunks, and tackle it one small chunk at a time.

I want to change the world, but I’m ready to start with changing me.

  4. My! I can’t believe a simple cartoon I’ve watched and even sung along over the years held so much inspiration! If Brain thinks changing the world is a daily occupation why should i think less?!
I must leave DEEP impressions everywhere i go…
    Kudos Dream Academy.

  6. This is really inspiring and I like the style of writing employed here Dami, yes we have to start at the micro level before thinking of the macro aspect of social transformation.

That tiny pebble in the water is my favourite catch.

But where is this Dream Academy going to take place and what are the logistics set in motion?

    1. Thanks Mubarak. It’s good to know that the metaphor resonates with you.
It’s a good picture that reflects how much impact each of us is capable of making.
DREAM Academy will hold in Lagos, Nigeria. Please stay tuned for details.
